Federal standard FMVSS 138 only requires the warning light once pressure has fallen 25% below what the manufacturer specifies. On a car set to 35 PSI, the light does not appear until 26.
So there is a nine-PSI stretch you drive on with no warning at all — longer braking, worse fuel economy, and tire shoulders wearing out early. The light is a last resort, not a gauge.

Is it loud?
